Virgin Mary of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa) is a reminder of the pain and suffering Virgin Mary went through. The word Seven Sorrows refers to the seven painful events that the she went through and that are mentioned in the Bible. The Church began to commemorate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows primarily to commemorate the earthly suffering of the Mother of God associated with the suffering of her Son.
Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows is the main patron saint of Slovakia. Her day is a national holiday in Slovakia.
The Church commemorates the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows on the Friday after Mortal Sunday (5th Sunday of Lent) and September 15.
